Melbourne Youth Orchestra
In short, I am a flute playing, sound recording, concert going, swing dancing, movie making, happy human.
Nathalie’s very first End of Year Concert
I have been playing the flute since I was 7 years old, and I was taught via the Suzuki Method. My teachers were some of the first Suzuki flute teachers in Australia, who are still teaching today.
My experience as a Suzuki flute student was a joyful one. I have great memories of travelling interstate and internationally to learn and play, I had cousins who also learnt music so we played together a lot.
Our families were committed to exploring our musical pursuits and exposing us to the opportunities that were available to us.
I’ve had the privilege to play at some of the best venues like Hamer Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre and the Sydney Opera House.
As a student, I also played in the wider musical community including
And shows such as
Nathalie age 12, sister and cousin with Toshio Takahashi at East Tennessee Suzuki Flute Institute, USA
Nathalie and Alan Hardy at the 2018 Leslie Barklamb Finals Competition
At age 17 I won the Under 18 Division of the Leslie Barklamb Flute Scholarship from the Victorian Flute Guild and was offered a place in Top Cats (now Top Acts) for high achieving music students in VCE and performed at Iwaki Auditorium at the Melbourne Recital Centre.
I studied a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the University of Melbourne, under Alan Hardy. My favourite part of my week was walking into my lesson with Alan. His kind manner made me want to play the best I could every week.
In 1998 I was certified as a Suzuki teacher giving me the skills to teach very young children. I am now completing my Advanced Accreditation, allowing me to teach up to Tertiary level.
As a musician in my own right, I attend Festivals, Workshops, Masterclasses and Concerts of all kinds, and am inspired by each event. I can then bring those new insights and inspirations to my teaching. Teaching in the Suzuki style provides a good musical foundation and then MFM combines it with all these different musical influences, to best serve the individual student
In my spare time, I love to play flute and piccolo in various Orchestras and Chamber Ensembles around Melbourne including:

Working on the set of Miss Fisher And the Crypt of Tears
However, I always had a passion for movies! It was this passion that led to me to work in the film industry as a boom operator, sound editor and sound designer.
Over 10 years I worked across Australia on some fantastic locations recording sounds for movies, award-winning documentaries, TV series, ABC cartoons and local smaller productions.
I’ve made some silly, fun, eerie, and awesome sound effects. Being a sound editor and designer is a lot like being a musician, just a different instrument! It’s pretty fun.
Working in a very different environment has, without doubt, expanded my teaching skills, and helped me realise the diverse opportunities available and how powerful music can be.
